Also in April 2022, as part of the initiative to encourage the ‘reduction, reuse and recycling’ of materials, especially plastic, David Francis joined nearly sixty Year 5 students and teachers at the Conifers Primary School in Weymouth. Many students at Conifers School have friends and family who are involved in the local fishing industry, so they were all keen to understand how the SeaHive shelters under the Pleasure Pier could increase the diversity and density of marine life, especially commercially valuable species of fish and crabs.
The students had recently organised a successful ‘Beach Clean Up’, and were interested to see how the remnants of fishing net they had collected could be turned into structures that beneit the marine environment. The students are planning to create their own artwork about the SeaHives which can be used as part of the publicity around their installation.
